The burnt-down Merkač, or Rakitnik, homestead on Breznica, with crosses to the slaughtered civilians.
On 28. On 28 November 1944, the occupation police, which is believed to have included some local residents, brutally murdered nine people, seven members of the Merkač a.k.a. Rakitnik family, including their son, a partisan, and an under-age girl, as well as a visiting neighbour, at Breznica near Prevalje, because of a confrontation with a partisan – the son of the family – who had deserted from the German army and had gone into the partisan forces earlier that day. The next day, they returned with carts, ransacked the homestead and set it on fire with the victims they threw into it.
